In-4, 7-(1) pages, (3) leaves and 51 plates under serpents. Paperback, printed and filled cover of the publisher, illustrated with an engraved vignette on the second plate.


First edition, illustrated with an original etching (portrait of his daughter) on chine appliqué signed by Matisse, and 50 plates engraved by Victor Jacquemin after the artist's drawings.


This collection was published by Matisse on the occasion of his exhibition at the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in Paris in October-November 1920. It appeared in the "Books" section of the 1920 Salon d'Automne (n° 257).


The preface is due to the poet and libertarian playwright Charles Vildrac, who also composed the catalog of the exhibition of the Bernheim gallery.


Edition at 1003 copies on Hollande Van Gelder, this one n° 708.
