Complete works
Paris, Alexandre Houssiaux, 1855-1858. 20 volumes in-8
(222 x 147 mm). Half tan basane, spine titled, decorated with gilt fleurons
with gilt fleurons, and tomé, edges jaspées (period bindings).
Edition illustrated with a portrait and 140 woodcut figures
after Daumier, C. Nanteuil, Henri Monnier, Tony Johannot, Gavarni,
Bertall, Gérard-Séguin, Français, Meissonier, etc.
The first edition of the complete works published by Houssiaux was only printed
printed between 1842 and 1848 in 17 volumes only after having been revised and
and corrected by Balzac, with important reorganizations compared to the
the original editions. Due to Balzac's death in 1850, the last works were
works were published only between 1853 and 1855 in three volumes and were
sold by the publisher as a supplement to the first 17 volumes from more or less
from more or less old reissues. Thus, all the volumes of the present
are dated 1855, except 7 which are dated 1858 (volumes 3,
13, 14, 15, 16, 18 and 19).
Jules Brivois (1883, pp. 23-25) indicates that the number of engravings varies
according to the editions and the copies: if the first edition must comprise
153 engravings not including the portrait-frontispiece, the reprint of 1858 was
was announced by Garnier Frères with 121 engravings and the portrait.
Our copy has 140 hors-texte engravings and the portrait.
