Concerning negotiations for the marriage of his granddaughter, Christine of Lorraine, to the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand I. [The marriage, negotiated by the Florentine banker Rucellai, trusted man of the Grand Duke, will be celebrated on April 30, 1589, three months after the death of Catherine]. She delayed answering him, to ensure the payment of the dowry of six hundred thousand ecus: "Now therefore, being my son Monsr de Lorraine, tumbé of agreement of the aforementioned payment, in such a way that mondit Cousin the Grand Duke will have occasion to be pleased with it". She hopes that one will thus "see there very soon a good & final resolution, such as on my part I desire it". She gives details on the way in which this sum will be collected and paid, as well as on the calendar of the payments, which she urges Rucellai to make accept to the Grand Duke| she will ensure herself the payment of the last 50.000 ecus, "dequoy je luy feray ma debte en propre & privé nom, ne pouvant a mon advis, mieul mieux luy fere vongnooistre lamitttié & bonne volunté que je luy porte, ny le desir que j'ay de veoir ce mariage effectué". She asks Rucellai to press the Grand Duke and "to make him see that I layme better than he does me. You know from having been in this company, the friendship and goodwill that the King, my son [Henri III], has for his daughter. Also, please believe that we do not value them more than the emperor's sister, whom the late Grand Duke married [François I de Médicis and Jeanne d'Autriche], and whom he can say he bought, having never had in marriage the sixth part of what we give to these days...
