VOLTAIRE François-Marie Arouet dit (1694-1778).
L.A.S. to the playwright and actor Philippe Nericault-Destouches (1680-1754), in Fort-Oiseau. Paris, "rue Traversière", s.d. "17 may" [1732]. 1 p. ½ in-4. Address on verso of the second leaf. Old paper restorations without affecting the text, creasing.
Beautiful letter entirely autograph of Voltaire, addressed to Destouches: "It presents itself my dear friend an occasion to exercise the first of virtues, and to fulfill the first of duties. It is not a question of simply helping but of pulling out of the most appalling abyss of misery, and of tearing away from despair and shame a whole family whose misfortunes should make those who persecute them shed tears. There is not a day to lose, it takes twenty louis. I have only ten, so put yourself in half with me. You will thank me for having indicated to you the means of investing your money so advantageously. These ten louis go for what you owe me my dear [...] put this action in the rank of your most estimable duties ". He adds " One is going to play the glorious one has Etiole [Etiolles, in the essonne], I will see it and from there I will go to see the author that I embrace with tenderness, and that I put above his century ". Then, in English " My humble services to yr lady. Farewell my honnnouur friend [...] ". Le Glorieux, comedy in 5 acts and in verse, Paris, Théâtre Français, January 18, 1732. That same year, Destouches, having become governor of Melun, retired to his home at Fort-Oiseau.
