VERLAINE Paul (1844-1896).
L.A.S. to his friend Edmond Lepelletier. 1 page in-12°. (Paris). May 1864. (folding, restored losses).

Exceptional and very rare document from the young Paul Verlaine, 20 years old. One of the very first known letters addressed to Lepelletier.

"My good, Come then if however you have nothing else that prevents you, in which case warn me by a word come Sunday at home around 2, 2 hours ¼. We'll go to the Fair, although it's pretty bad this year. I have just passed my writing exam at City Hall. Also, I am making up for it, as you see, by scribbling like a cat. See you Sunday. Love." On the insistent advice of his father, Verlaine passed an entrance exam to the Prefecture of the Seine (Paris).

He started at the town hall of the 9th district, rue Drouot, at the registry office (marriage office) as a trainee expeditionary. He was appointed on January 1, 1865, but was dismissed in July 1871. Verlaine became friends with Lepelletier, a fellow student at the Lycée Bonaparte in the late 1850s.
