FLAUBERT Gustave (1821-1880).
L.A.S. "GFlaubert", s.l., October 21, 1879, addressed to Georges CHARPENTIER. 2 pages in-12 (folds, tears, tape, missing without affecting the text).
Precious letter of Flaubert to his editor._x000B_The writer reviews there the works in progress, the publications and reissues. Flaubert is attentive to the launching of the Château des coeurs and refuses to collaborate with a journalist recommended by Charpentier. He does not want that one presses him or that one announces too early his next publication: "The least advertisement would cut me the musette, absolutely. "Guy de Maupassant, who has to go to Croisset the following month, is asked to collect from Charpentier what the latter owes to Flaubert. Finally, Flaubert instructs Charpentier to congratulate Zola on Nana: "I find it splendid," he writes, underlining the adjective three times. "My good man, You will receive at the same time as this the end of Salammbô [sic, for L'Éducation sentimentale]. I don't know if I have given you the final copy of what extends from page 506 to 511? See to it. What a printer! Look at the page headers and the amount of letters that are crooked! Finally, it is finished, thank God! Bergerat must have received on Sunday morning the two drawings of Croisset? My niece and I did everything we could to satisfy the said dream. If he is not happy, damn! When the Chateau des Coeurs appears, don't forget "la Chanson des Brises". As for M. Lafitte, 1° I know that he admires "le Voyage autour de ma chambre" by Môssieu de Maistre! which makes me not very willing to be pleasant to him. 2° To announce my novel, in the middle of the success of Nana, seems to me to be not very clever. 3° It is promised to Madame Adam. 4° If I am not to finish it, it is to speak of it now. The slightest claim would cut me off, absolutely. Let's at least wait for "The Castle of Hearts!" So, until further notice: I refuse. Another guitar: in the middle of September you published a new edition of Salammbô, and L'Éducation sentimentale is going to appear again. You would be kind enough to extend to me now the amount of these two editions, by deducting what I owe you as book acquisitions. Young Guy is to come and see me on the 8th of next month. He will take the money from you. Should I tell him? Answer on that, please, and on the rest. Yes, I have read Nana (8 serials), and I find it splendid, you can tell the author for me by shaking his hand. All yours, my darling Your G. Flaubert".
