Installed in Barbizon since 1849, Millet is one of the founders of this artistic movement which notably influenced the artists who initiated the Impressionist movement. A realist painter, he is particularly famous for his rural scenes and peasantry. This drawing represents a scene on the edge of a forest where, in the absence of human figures, nature dominates. It could be a preparatory sketch for the painting Dead Birch, Crossroads of the Thorn, Forest of Fontainebleau, done in 1866-1867 (Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon).
