Réalisée d'après des esquisses de Pierre Paul Prud'hon (1758 - 1823), le maître et l'amant de la peintre, la composition fut un véritable succès. Elle est aujourd'hui conservée au musée du Louvre (INV 6586). Sujet mélancolique, il renvoie à l'union impossible de l'élève avec son maître déjà marié. Bonheur inaccessible, il poussera finalement Constance à se suicider.
