Set of four double-pages from an imperial album of a collection entitled "Zhi Gong Tu" vol.8, in ink and colors on silk, representing minorities of the Guizhou province. The four double-pages presented here concern the Miao minority. Each of them presents a couple: - The work of rice: the woman pounding the rice, the man carrying the sieve, - The fisherman making a net and the peasant woman with a hoe, - The homage to the ancestors: the woman with an alcohol offering, the man with a rooster and an instrument, - The warrior and the woman with crossed arms (representing a minority considered wilder). There must have been 23 portraits for this minority. Sight size : 32 x 30 cm for each single page (framed under glass) PROVENANCE In the family (FR) since the end of the 19th century. N. B. The "Zhi Gong Tu" is a collection of paintings and texts in Chinese and Manchu on the geographical origins, habits, costumes and customs, rites and entertainments, matrimonial customs, production methods, and status of the minorities of the regions of China under the Qing Court during the Kangxi reign. Compiled between 1750 and 1761, it consists of several volumes divided into illustrated albums, calligraphy albums and printed albums. These pages are from the eighth volume of a series that must have had eight or twelve albums. "Zhi Gong Tu Four double pages from an imperial album from a collection entitled "Zhi Gong Tu", vol. 8, Guizhou, China, Qing dynasty, Qianlong period (1736 - 1795). Painted in ink and color on silk, mounted and framed. These four double-pages represent four minority couples, men and women facing each other, from the Guizhou province. Each page has a title locating geographically each of the tribes, a short note presenting the historical origin, geographical location and clothing, religion and entertainment, matrimonial customs, production methods and tribute status of the "Miao" people. Miao" people, described in Manchu and Chinese. These four pages belong to the eighth volume of a series that probably includes eight or twelve. According to the facial expressions, costumes and action details of the 23 Guizhou Miao portraits, they can be classified into four different types of representations. Thus, these four pages are organized as follows: The title: Right side (male): 定番州八番 Left side (female): 定番州八番妇 On the right page, the man is dressed in Han-style clothes and holding a basket; On the left page, the woman, with her hair up in a bun and dressed in green, is stacking rice. The title: Right side (man): 贵州省 都匀黎平等处 佯犷苗 Left side (woman): 都匀黎平等处佯犷苗妇 On the right page, the man is seated, making a creel for fishing, at his side a knife and a fish basket; On the left page, the woman is holding a hoe. Title: Right side (man): 贵定黔西等处木狫 Left side (woman): 贵定黔西等处木狫妇 On the right page, the man is paying hom - mage to the ancestors, in front of a grass dragon with five-colored flags on the ground, holding a rooster and an instrument; On the left page, the woman is walking forward, a bottle of alcohol in her hands. The title: Right side (man): 清平县九股苗 Left side (woman): 清平县九股苗妇 On the right page, the man is dressed in armor and helmeted; he is holding a spear and shield in his hands, as well as a sword between his teeth; On the left page, the woman is standing with her arms crossed. In the book, this minority is considered as more barbaric, and placed after the others.
