LARGE PLAQUE in chased bronze, patinated and partly gilded representing the Lamentation around the Tomb of Christ. In the center of the composition and diagonally, the dead Christ is lying on a cloth| in front of him, we recognize the Virgin, Saint John, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus| at his feet, Mary Magdalene kneels, the vase of ointments placed next to her| in the foreground, a holy woman seated next to a basket filled with the Instruments of the Passion and, on the right, another holy woman at prayer| above Christ, four angels join in the mourning in attitudes of sorrow. The composition of this Lamentation is based on a drawing by Jan van der Straet engraved by Raphaël Sadeler. Several copies of this plate are known in different European museums, each one being unique because of the chasing work that allows variations in the treatment of fabrics and expressions. This appears to be a somewhat late, high-quality cast, later than the original model made by the Augsburg silversmith Zacharias Lencker around 1610.
