LÉONARD LIMOSIN (CA. 1505 - CA. 1576)
Enamel plate painted with gold highlights representing a bust of Antoine d'Halluin, Lord of Piennes, salmon counter-enamel. The gentleman is depicted turned three-quarters to the right wearing a flat hat with a feather and a collared pourpoint with a broken shirt collar. Monogrammed lower right * L * L *.Limoges, Léonard Limosin, circa 1560/70 Height : 14 cm - Width : 10 cm(small lacks and slight restorations) Antoine d'Halluin (or Anthonis van Hallewijn), from a Flemish then Picardy family, was born around 1505. Lord of Piennes and Maignelais, he was Grand Louvetier of France, an office created in 1520 by François I, who swore an oath of loyalty to the king. He was also a knight of the Order of Saint-Michel and the Order of the Holy Spirit. In 1525, he married Louise de Crèvecoeur, widow of the Admiral de Bonnivet, another great character of the Kingdom. A man of war, he showed his bravery many times, against the Imperials in Artois in 1523, in Italy in 1537, in the defense of Metz in 1552. He died a year later, facing the assault given by the army of Charles V in the city of Thérouanne. Two portraits of him by François Clouet and his workshop are known and are kept in the Musée de Condé in Chantilly. The drawing that was probably used as a model is the one dated around 1547 (MN261, B137, fig.). The enamel gives an expression of an older man, perhaps executed some years later. During his long career, Limosin proved to be the enameler of kings, portraying Francis I during his lifetime, Henry II and Charles IX, but also the ladies of the court, wives or mothers of the sovereigns. We must add the great figures of the state as the Constable Anne de Montmorency or Jacques Galliot de Genouillac, grand master of artillery, as well as cardinals and bishops of the high nobility. It is only natural that he, the most renowned enameller of Limoges, should have painted the eminent character of the Grand Louvetier de France. This portrait of Antoine d'Halluin, unpublished to this day, is a precious discovery.
