QUENEAU Raymond.
autograph manuscript, Christopher, [1955]| 3 pages in-4
(27 x 21 cm).
A tribute to the creator of Sapeur Camember.
The manuscript, in black ink, on the verso of typewritten pages of French dialogue from Fellini's film La Strada, translated by Queneau, shows a few erasures and corrections.
This article, published in L'Express on November 17, 1955, presenting the reprinting in serial form in L'Express of the works of Christophe, the author of Facéties du Sapeur Camember and La Famille Fenouillard
While Queneau acknowledges André Breton's great merit "for having energetically shaken up the literary 'scale of values', not so much in order to knock off the dry fruits as to bring new glories to maturity:
Lautréamont, Cros, Sade, Jarry, Roussel, Nouveau, etc.", he also wants to do justice to popular authors, to those who wrote children's books, to the precursors of science fiction. And he congratulates L'Express on the republication of the works of Georges Colomb, known as Christophe. "The work of Christopher is a sum of fantasy and wisdom. [...] When the pleasure of reading begins to wane (because of having read too many bad manuscripts and bad novels), one rediscovers the original flavour by picking up Christopher's books. Yes: reading. For Christophe's images are not intended to replace writing. Drawings and text form a harmonious whole for him.
Attached is the corrected typescript| an autograph note, specifying the dates of Christophe's birth and death (1856-1943) as well as the date of publication of his works| and the page from L'Express with the printed article, followed by the 6 illustrated vignettes of the first adventures of the Sapeur Camember
