SAND George (1804-1876).
Lélia (Paris, Henri Dupuy, imprimeur-éditeur, L. Tenré, libraire, 1833), 2 volumes bound in one in-8 (21,5x13,3 cm), half lavaliered morocco with corners, gilt binding, spine with boxes framed with triple gilt binding and decorated with fl eurons, gilt head (19th century binding).
-lavaliere morocco with corners, gilt edges, spine with caissons framed with triple gilt edges and decorated with fl eurons, gilt head (19th century binding)| cream morocco slipcase in the shape of a book by G. Huser.
First edition.
Precious copy offered by George Sand to Alfred de Musset at the beginning of their affair, with a double mailing.
Volume I: 4 ff . n. ch. (false title, title, dedication and epigraph), 350 p. Volume II: 3 ff . n. ch. (epigraph erroneously placed before the false title, title,), 383 p. (pp. 209 to 225 replaced by a handwritten copy) and 1 bl.
This copy is enriched with two signed autograph letters on each of the title pages. On the first volume one reads: "to Monsieur mon gamin / d'Alfred / George"| on the second: "To Monsieur / Monsieur le Vicom[te] / Alfred de Musse[t] / respectful homage / from his devoted / servant / George Sand".
This copy bears witness to the torments of Sand and Musset's stormy affair. The latter has in fact glued, in volume I, the false title to the title to hide the sending of his former mistress. He has also torn out some leaves. Musset's governess, Adèle Colin Martellet, recounted the reason for this mutilation in her Alfred de Musset intime, souvenirs de sa gouvernante (F. Juven, 1906): "In this last volume, sixteen pages have been torn out, pages 209 to 225, where George Sand describes an orgy scene in which everyone seems to be in a state bordering on insanity, and in which the character of Sténio is mocked and plays a disgusting role. [...] I assumed that M. de Musset, reading, a long time later, had wanted to remove from this book the uninteresting passage that displeased him. He had also pasted the dedication of the first volume with two sealing loaves which are still visible. The deleted pages were replaced by 6 handwritten sheets when the book was bound. A moving account of one of the most famous love affairs in 19th century French literature. A fine copy, nicely bound, in an excellent state of preservation (some minor rubbing on the nerves and headpieces)| very fresh inside, rare scattered freckles, marks of wax stamps applied by Musset who had sealed the dedication page of the first volume. Small angular lack to the first dedication leaf with the word "g[amin]" redone. The mailing of the 2nd volume slightly trimmed by the binder. Case broken. PROVENANCE Alfred de Musset| Jacques Guérin (20 March 1985, n° 90)| Paul-Louis Weiller (30 November 1998, n° 143). EXHIBITIONS Alfred de Musset (Bibliothèque nationale, 1957, n° 91)| George Sand. Visages du Romantisme (Bibliothèque nationale, 1977, n° 135). BIBLIOGRAPHY Carteret, II, p. 306 (copy cited).
