PROUST Marcel (1871-1922).
L.A.S. "Your Marcel", January 1 [1898], to Lucien DAUDET| 2 pages and a quarter in8 (mourning).
Affectionate letter evoking the recent death of Alphonse Daudet (16 December 1897).
"My dear little Lucien Today, the first of January, when one thinks of the future, like you, with you, I think of the past, and of the one we will no longer see, to whom I would have wished a good year, good health. My dear little one, you will never know how close I am to you. I probably did not take the time to tell you this, since my letters and visits have remained unanswered. Or rather you have so much to write, and probably so little taste. But don't forget me all the same.
The past years have brought you so much sorrow that I don't have the courage to wish you anything for the new one. It will not at least erase the memories and sorrows that make me cherish you even more.
