"I am afraid that the church of St. Antoine has been defiantly painted over, but perhaps you have addressed your remonstrances to the sub-prefect, who has had the operation suspended. I will write to the Minister of the Interior at any risk| it will not be the first time that conservative measures have been taken too late. The whitewashing has been expressly forbidden by circulars from the Mother of the Interior & the Mother of the
Cults. The bishops have issued orders to proscribe it - recently again the instructions published by the Master of Public Instruction not only declare it harmful, but also give procedures for its removal. Well, nothing can stop the brush of the vandals. Until fines are instituted against the parish priests and the fabricators, they will not be able to stop it... He regrets that it is impossible to preserve the remains of the abbey of Ourscamp, but by warning him in good time, it would be easy to prevent the sale of stained glass windows of churches: "These sales are formally forbidden, and the parish priests expose themselves by indulging in them to legal proceedings"| only the Minister of Finance can sell public property...
