ELUARD Paul (1895-1952).
Autograph POEM signed "Paul Eluard," La Justice n'est pas faiblesse, [1951]| 3 1/2 pages in-4 on blue glossy paper.
Working manuscript of this poem in support of imprisoned Communist activists in Greece.
In blue ink on blue glossy paper, the manuscript has numerous extensive erasures and corrections, with entire stanzas crossed out and redone.
The original title "¨For a general amnesty in Greece" has been crossed out and replaced by La Justice n'est pas faiblesse, under which title it was published in Les Lettres françaises of 13 December 1951, with the subtitle "Un poème de Paul Éluard pour une amnistie générale en Grèce". The poem was collected in 1952 in Poèmes pour tous.
The manuscript conforms to the defi nitive version, divided into seven parts (I-VII), but the corrections give very numerous variants. Only the last two stanzas are numbered here (6 and 7).
The poem is dedicated "to the memory of my wonderful friend Angelos
Sikelianos", the Greek poet Angelos SIKELIANOS (1884-1951).
"All those who are captives in the jails of Greece are united by the heart, their hope is the same [...] All countries are given to me to believe myself in the skin of others But I have chosen the streets of Athens to no longer think myself mortal [...] Because Greece has suffered and because she has dominated Her suffering like the sea Is dominated by the sun Time is spent measuring the chances of being able to last"
