CORÉE VERS 1900

Wooden pipe with label " offered by the missionaries of Seoul in memory of the passage of the Commander L. Audemard.1901 ".

L. opium pipe approximately: 50/60 cm

"Commandant Audemard is modesty and simplicity itself.

When we talk to him about the trip he has just accomplished with particular happiness in regions, some of which had not yet been explored, he defends himself from having done nothing extraordinary. It's not exploration," he says, "it's a route survey...

And yet, it is exploration, despite his modesty, and a good one, without ostentation or fuss, but rich in hydrographic results.

For Commandant Audemard is above all a hydrographer. And what a mission he brings back to us! We have seen the enormous quantity of notes and observations he made during his voyages, supported by nearly two hundred charts* meticulously drawn up with altitudes, true staff maps, all documents illustrated with photographic clichés in profusion, and even drawings."

Echo of China, August 16-17, 1910 * Commander Audemard was renowned for his surveying skills, some of which can be seen illustrated in the China Atlas. Upper Yangtze and Yalong. Survey executed in 1910 by M. Audemard, Captain of Frigate. Atlas of 37 sheets at the scale of 1: 37 500 and one assembly sheet / Audemard Mission by Audemard, Louis (1865-1955).
