FOULON DE VAULX ANDRÉ (1873-1951)POÈTE ET ROMANCIER
Approximately 650 L.A.S., ca. 1938-1948, to Jeanne SANDELION| more than 1600 pages in various formats (including 13 postcards), numerous headings, a few addresses.
Important literary and friendly correspondence from the poet to the poetess and woman of letters Jeanne Sandelion (1899-1976), friend of Montherlant.
We can only quote a few excerpts from these letters which show a keen interest in contemporary arts and literature. There is a lot of talk about readings, shows, the work of the Gens de lettres committee and the Société des Poètes français, literary prizes and reviews, and the work of both of them.
July 13 [1938], encouragement as president of the Société des Poètes français... September 9 [1942], he has doubts about the ban on talking about Aragon, whose name is read everywhere with abracadabra praise... He has reservations about Catherine Pozzi's talent... September 11, his disappointment with Giraudoux's film after La Duchesse de Langeais... 23 September [1943], the superiority of Montherlant's La Reine morte over Mauriac's Asmodée, but "it is not this kind of work that lasts"... October 2nd, criticism of Fresnay's "new film", Le Corbeau, which has "no cinematic value"... October 23rd, news of Cocteau... November 1st, Giraudoux's Sodom and Gomorrah is a success, but the audience is vulgar... 7th November, rumours concerning Sacha Guitry's mysterious illness, the victim of an attack "which would be a consequence of his attitude to current events"... 20 November, account of the accidental death of Maurice Denis... 6th December, echoes of Le Soulier de satin: "great beauties, it seems, burst forth here and there in a long and boring whole. Yanette finds it really too theological. Geraldy told me: "It's a hard blow! January 11 [1945], echoes of the purge: M. Batilliat condemned to forced labor, Paul Chack shot ("he was not defensible")... February 27, on Catulle Mendès: "an artist but he had no moral sense"... March 3, on the political and social situation: the Resistance would like to make a revolution, De Gaulle is unpopular, the communists are trying to seize power... 10 March: Béatrice Bretty, G. Mandel's friend, returns home... 17 July: "Valery is lost. Just today I received a letter from Mme.
Delétang. Yanette saw Mondor two days ago| he has no more hope. 22 August, lunch in Montparnasse with "the illustrious Spanish communist" Picasso... June 17 [1947], sharp criticism of the government's policy towards letters... 11 August: "I am delighted that your Montherlant is writing to you, doing you favours and trying to be useful to you"... Etc. Foulon de Vaulx also evokes in the course of the letters many writers: F. Ambrière, Anouilh, Apollinaire, Germaine Beaumont, P. Béarn, P. Benoit, A. Billy, Joe Bousquet, Éd. Bourdet, Emm. Bove, P. Brisson, Ph. Chabaneix, Gide, J. Green, F. Gregh, Ph. Hériat, F. Jammes, M. Jouhandeau, P. Louÿs, Th. Maulnier, R. de Montesquiou, H. Pourrat, H. de Régnier, R.M. Rilke, J. Sarment, G. Vicaire, etc.
