John FLAXMAN (York 1755 - London 1826) was a very famous sculptor and draughtsman who influenced many artists in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He first worked for the Wedgwood factory. During his stay in Rome between 1787 and 1794, he developed a neoclassical style based on the extreme simplicity of the drawing, described as purist, which marked a whole generation. It was spread in particular by the numerous illustrations he made of Dante and Homer as well as of Greek mythology.
