Paris, Veuve Pissot, 1745. In-8 (195 x 130 mm), [4]-16-216-[4] pp, folding map of the Amazon. Full marbled calf, arms and triple gilt fillet on boards, smooth spine decorated with gilt irons in boxes, red morocco title-piece, gilt fillet on the edges, inner gilt border, red edges, marbled paper end-papers, bookmark preserved (contemporary binding).
First edition of this account of one of the great French scientific voyages of exploration, illustrated with a folded map of the course of the Amazon, engraved by Delahaye after La Condamine.
The volume does not contain the second part, Lettre à Madame *** sur l'émeute populaire excitée en la ville de Cuenca [...], like many other copies.
In 1735, La Condamine was sent to Peru with other scientists in order to measure the length of an arc of meridian near the Equator. He recounts the adventures of an epic journey that was to last nine years, describes his descent of the Amazon on a raft, offers for the first time a description of rubber, etc.
