GIROLAMO DA SANTACROCE
The Transfiguration
Oil on panel
63.7 x 84.5 cm
A painter born in Bergamo, he was active from 1516 in Venice where he worked in the studio of Gentile Bellini (c. 1429 - 1507).
In his will, Bellini bequeathed him drawings of Orientals, recalling his trip to Constantinople. After the death of his master, it is likely that Santacroce entered the workshop of his brother, Giovanni Bellini (1430-1516). The production of this period is still unknown, since he probably devoted himself mainly to commissions from the Bellini workshop. Once emancipated from the workshop, he pursued a career on his own, his style and manner remaining resolutely attached to what he had learned in his youth. Thus, our composition is reminiscent of the one by Giovanni Bellini, on the same theme, painted in the 1480s and now in the Capodimonte Museum in Naples (Fig. 1).
