L.A.S. "C. de Gaulle", Mainz 12 March 1925, to his "dear comrade" [Lucien NACHIN]| 4 pages in-8.
Nice letter on his article "Doctrine a priori ou doctrine des circonstances" (Revue militaire française, n° 45, 1 March 1925, pp. 306-328).
He assures his "comrade" of his sensitivity to the "testimony of a mind such as yours", and to his "thoughtful observations". His "modest study" was dictated by his "personal reflections as a recent student of the École de Guerre. While doing this noble and necessary institution the justice it deserves, I thought I should point out to minds that can think for themselves the danger of an overly dogmatic doctrine, which is becoming more pronounced. Not wishing, for the moment, to leave the tactical field, I have not spoken of the tendencies of the same kind that you observe in the field of organization.
However, in this respect, I absolutely share your opinion. I am deeply convinced that this order of French military thought is due to the very nature of our national spirit. It is in order to show this, and thus to give more scope to the warning, that I have resorted to history. Perhaps [...] this invocation did not strengthen the thesis. In this case, I will regret it, because: to persuade or, at least, to make people think was my only goal"...
