GAMBETTA Léon (1838-1882)
14 L.A.S. "L. Gambetta" or "Léon Gambetta", Ems, Wiesbaden,
Villeneuve (Vaud) August-October 1869, to his friend André LAVERTUJON| 62 pages in-8.
Very interesting political correspondence to the republican journalist
André LAVERTUJON (1827-1914), editor-in-chief of La Gironde, and one of the editors of the new political and literary Tribune française. He was to be secretary-general of the government of National Defence, and later a senator]. [Ems around August 10, 1869]. "More than ever, the times are propitious| but it is not FERRY's manifesto, which I have not read, that can be an argument to me. I have seen NEFFTZER's reply, which seems to me too German. Ferry could not get me his article. I have read an answer he sent to Le Temps, since he has been here. ...] he is wrong to write so often"... One should not be alarmed by the judicial incident in Bordeaux... August 12. He is suspicious of Lacroix and Rasetti, as sponsors. In short: "no confidence, beg, say you want six hundred thousand francs at the very least, see them and touch them, make an inviolable charter and give in only at a price of gold"... [Wiesbaden August 16]. Following a letter from Dr. FIEUZAL to Lavertujon, mentioning Gambetta's health, the latter assures that he is much better... Villeneuve August 30. He persists in believing that Lavertujon's election is not as compromised as he thinks it is, against ARAGO| the conference organized at Saint-Denis is to be decisive, and Gambetta indicates precisely its content, concerning the obligations of the State "once democratically organized," which will be "social, initiating and protecting," and without excessive reaction against the despotism of the fallen regime| He develops his ideas of an education "absolutely civil & secular" by secular teachers and "strangers to celibacy", proposes to provide him with a comparative table of the budget of instruction since 1802, and recommends to conclude that this reform is linked to "the very recasting of the political organization"... And to review possible candidates for the presidency of the meeting: Henri Martin,
Vacherot, Michelet, Pelletan, André Rousselle, Carnot, Jourdan, etc. "
But Ferry never. - He doesn't have enough action on the populo"... Bonportsous-
Montreux (Vaud) September 5. He advises to multiply the meetings, of which he explains all the interest| he has used them a lot, "especially with the voters of the moderate nuance", with enormous results. He believes in by-elections in November, and persists in thinking of a dissolution of the
Parliament: "this persistence comes to me from the attitude of Jerome in the
Senate"| he asks what they say in Paris. "What about the candidacies of the former proscribed?"... He expresses doubts about possible sources of funding for their political leaf... September 9. Reflections on M. Dub[ochet]'s interest in their newspaper project, and comments on facts of the day: the rumor of a serious illness of BONAPARTE, Jerome's speech, and the program of January 19, 1870. "It is the manifesto of the regency and of the majority of the little one| it is the future policy for a year or two hence. But by that time it will be sterile."...
He underlines the immediate danger of it and recommends "to take note of the proposals of the prince, his contradictions, his confessions especially, his concerns, his repentances, and to leave from there to judge the current Bonaparte family [...]. There are in it precious words on the feeling which the Napoleons have of their imminent fall| not being able any more to chew the
Revolution, they would like to marry it and to exploit it"... Wednesday morning [September].
Ferry gave him the best news of the Saint-Denis conference: "Bravo! Continue, vigorously and we will push the bleating Arago"... [September]. Thoughts on how to ward off electoral controversies about his judgment, and the candidacy in Paris of a provincial... Echoes of conversations with LAURIER, where it is question of Simon, Favre, Arago... September 20. He congratulates himself on not having gone to the Lausanne Congress [of the International League for Peace and Freedom, to determine the bases of a federal organization of Europe]... September 26. He believes too easily in the news: "these rumours of a coup d'état are periodic, - they will inevitably recur at each serious crisis of the present government, it is the trace of its origin that each one finds at the hour of danger. [...] The fact remains that these alarms, right or wrong, serve to diagnose the situation. It seems clear to me that there is no more personnel for the legitimate insurrection than for the government that should emerge from it"... October 1. If Gambetta had been on the scene, KÉRATRY's proposal would have remained what it was: "a provocation without scope and a suspicious attempt"...
Recommendations for La Réforme| he congratulates Lavertujon on his article on the rumours of a coup d'état, but advises
