DROUOT Antoine (1774-1847)
33 L.A.S. and 4 L.S. "Drouot", Portoferrajo then Nancy 1814-1840, to André PONS DE L'HÉRAULT| 55 pages in-4, numerous addresses.
Interesting correspondence, from the time when Drouot was governor of the island of Elba, and Pons administrator of the iron mines in Rio Marina, until the middle of the July monarchy. We can only give here a brief outline of this rich correspondence.
Portoferraio July 13, 1814: after the scandalous scene caused "by the imprudent speeches of the worker Scaldighi and by the unbridled insolence of his comrades who pushed the audacity to the point of wounding gendarmes with stones", arrests will take place, but it seems useless to send a reinforcement of troops to Rio...
December 20th, presentation of Jules de KLAPROTH, "naturalist and son of the famous Prussian chymist"...
Nancy May 11, 1822, answers of Drouot to the questions of Pons for his Essay on the reign of Napoleon: landing of the Emperor in Elba, organization of the military system of the island, work made with the fortifications, project of the Emperor to make a lazaret, stay of the Emperor in Marciana...
July 17, 1824, admiring thanks for a letter in verse: "this language of the gods is unknown to me"...
July 18, 1825, he charges Pons to thank the marshal SUCHET of his good memory| he rejoices of his cure...
October 30: the Congress of Châtillon fully justifies the Emperor to have refused peace, "but you accuse very severely the duke of Vicence [CAULAINCOURT] who, I am well convinced of it, was animated of the most lively desire to get peace to France. I fear that this accusation will lead to discussions which will be a subject of joy for all the enemies of our fatherland"... Drouot is distressed by what "the Hercules of Cassel Mountain" [Jerome Bonaparte] said of him...
November 22, 1826. He received the two lithographed portraits of the general
MICHEL, his former companion in arms, but does not know which is the general living in Nancy to whom the second is intended...
January 11, 1828, it is 54 years since he started the journey of life| he begs his old friend to accept the receipt of the 5500 francs that he lent him (receipt attached)...
October 15th, he points out "a big mistake" in De la bataille et de la capitulation de Paris : "You say that there were three hundred thousand quintals of powder at Grenelle. I heard it said at the time that there were three hundred thousand pounds, that is to say a hundred times less"...
June 14, 1831, he regrets that Pons is recalled from the prefecture of Jura...
June 8, 1836, list of the ranks which he "traversed", details on his decorations, titles and dignities...
July 9, he sends back the proof (attached) of his biographical note, with corrections and deletions to be made, including a passage evoking the ungrateful and the felons. He himself burned his notes and materials "on the great events which preceded the year 1816": they were incomplete and inaccurate and he was unable to rise to "the height of the subject"... Elsewhere, there is mention of Pons' trials and financial troubles, visits by General Bertrand and Eusèbe Salverte, etc.
Attached are a L.A.S. from his brother François Drouot, 4 L.A.S. from Baron d'Haussez, and one from Félix Duvert (to Antoine Coupart)| plus a facsimile
