In-12 (195 x 133 mm), 177 pp.-[3] ff. brown morocco, morocco boards and cartonnage with double gilt filleting and gilt monogram "HM" in spine, smooth spine titled and decorated with two boxes with triple gilt framing, gilt head, marbled paper endpapers, relay cover preserved (1860), bookmark preserved (later binding).
First French edition, very slightly enlarged, published one year after the original Belgian edition (Bruxelles, Dumont). It is decorated with an etched portrait of Balzac by Hédouin in the frontispiece (foxing) and two facsimiles of Balzac's autographs hors-texte at the end of the volume.
PROVENANCE Henri Monod (bookplate with his motto "libro liber"| monogram).
