[SPINOZA Baruch (1632-1677)]
In-12 (145 x 87 mm), [bl. ff.], 2 title ff., 14 ff.], 531 pp. (numbering error: page 322 followed by "223" instead of 323 and p. 452 followed by 353 instead of 453), [29 pp.] Table, f. of Errors Occurring in Printing, 30 pp. Curious and necessary remarks for the understanding of this book, [bl. ff.] Full burgundy morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with flowers in the spandrels, smooth ornamented spine, fawn morocco title-piece, inner scroll, gilt edges, red bookmark preserved (18th century binding "à la Derome Le Jeune").
First French edition of the tractatus theologico-politicus.
The translation, due to the freethinker Gabriel de Saint-Glen, appeared under three different titles in order to avoid censorship - as recalled by a handwritten mention in ink and pencil at the beginning of the volume: La
Clef du sanctuaire, Réflexions curieuses d'un esprit désintéressé and
Traitté des cérémonies superstitieuses des Juifs.
This translation is all the more important as it publishes for the first time the handwritten annotations made by Spinoza on his own copy, in the appendix entitled Curious and Necessary Remarks for the Understanding of this Book.
A fine copy in old morocco.
(Slight spotting not affecting the text pp.65-68 and a few freckles| corners (leather missing on corners of upper board) and spine dull, slight scratches on lower board).
REFERENCES Van der Linde, n°11 - Wolf, n°371.
