Rome | Paris, Le Jay, 1774. In-4 (297 x 233 mm), 416 pp. Full speckled calf, spine ribbed and decorated with fleurons, burgundy morocco title-piece, double gilt fillet on the edges, red edges, marbled paper end-papers (period binding).
First edition in-4, with a portrait of Montaigne engraved on the frontispiece by Augustin de Saint-Aubin. After the publication of the Essays in 1580, Montaigne spent six months in Rome. The text of his travel diary was compiled and annotated by Meusnier de Querlon.
Dedicated to Buffon, the work was published in four editions during the year 1774, one in in-4 format (from which our copy is taken) and three in-12.

Good general condition (despite some scattered foxing)| binding damaged with rubbing and a few tears).
