DIDEROT Denis (1713-1784) - ALEMBERT Jean d' (1717-1783)
Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, par une société de gens de lettres.
Geneva, Jean-Léonard Pellet| Neufchâtel, la Société typographique, 1778-1779. 36 volumes of text in-4 (261 x 210 mm) and 3 volumes of plates in-4. Full marbled calf, spine ribbed and decorated with gilt fleurons, title-pieces in blond morocco, tomato-pieces in green morocco, red edges, gilt fillets on the edges, marbled paper end-papers (period bindings).
Third Geneva edition, the second in-4, of the famous Encyclopaedia
Diderot-D'Alembert, a monument of major importance in the history of ideas.
It is illustrated with a portrait of Diderot and D'Alembert engraved by Cathelin after Cochin in the first volume as well as 11 folding tables, 4 of which are in the first volume (Système figuré des connoissances humaines - Table de la mer adriatique - Dimensions des affuts de campagne, des calibres de 12, 8 et 4 - Division générale de l'Afrique), 1 in the second (Division générale de l'Amérique), 1 in the third (Division générale de l'Asie), and 1 in the seventh (non décrit par Adams. State of the leased goods distinguished by nature & quota, & of the royalties carried by the leases), 1 in the thirteenth (General division of Europe), 1 in the sixteenth (not described by Adams. Figurative system of the parts of the geography), 1 in the nineteenth (Table of the ancient itinerary measures, & of their relations between them & with the modern measures) and 1 in the twenty-sixth (Table of the ratio of the weights of the principal places of Europe). The 2 folding tables in the 34th volume are included in the pagination and constitute pages 717 to 719 and 731 to 734.
Adams is mistaken when he says that pages 731-734 are missing since they are replaced by the second folding leaf, which is the case in all the other copies we have been able to compare.
To this set are added 1 plate in volume 36 (Horlogerie,
Différents Echappements) and 3 volumes with a total of 434 plates and 10 folding maps.
There are some differences with the description given by Adams.
The first volume is dated 1779, page 762 is correctly figured. Volume 14 contains 991 pages and not 984. There are two tables not referenced by Adams, in volumes 7 and 16.
The E of "Edition" on the title of volume 16 is correctly accented.
A complete copy of the text, all plates and tables.
REFERENCE Adams, Bibliographie des Oeuvres de Denis Diderot, I, G7, p. 365.
Good overall condition (used condition of bindings (lack of top cover on vol. 36)| marginal spotting, some foxing, a few marginal tears without affecting the text).
