Siegfried Samuel Bing An avant-garde collector
An art dealer, collector and patron of the arts, this Frenchman of German origin arrived in Paris to work in his father's porcelain company.
In 1863, he decided to create his own factory. Five years later, Siegfried Bing and his partner Jean-Baptiste Leullier were awarded a medal at the Universal Exhibition, foreshadowing their future career. In the 1870s, Bing undertook a series of trips to Japan, China and India and, amazed by what he discovered, brought many objects to Europe.
His collections and exhibitions, in particular that of 760 Japanese prints at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and the Universal Exhibition of 1900, met with great success and aroused the admiration of connoisseurs and the general public alike.
Among these objects, an exceptional bronze vase from the Han period (2nd B.C. - 2nd A.D.) and a bronze mirror from the Tang period were loaned to the 7th exhibition "Animals in Chinese Art" at the Musée Cernuschi in May-June 1922. Some of the pieces in this collection have the distinction of being sold with an invoice from the Bing House dated 1920s.
