Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
+ Autograph letter (draft) to HUDSON LOWE, Longwood July 26, 1818| 1 page in-fol. in pencil, with erasures and corrections (watermark in the "Britannia" style| slit in the center fold, and very well repaired)| under red morocco case with portrait.
Protest letter to the Governor of St. Helena, Hudson
Lowe, to be written and signed by his companion Count Montholon.
"I received your letter at 6 p.m. I will not be able to show it to the Emperor before noon tomorrow, for he has been very badly off today.
In translating it I have noticed the error where you are. You're thinking of what he had Dr. Stockau [STOKOE] call in consultation, that he could receive his services as an ordinary doctor. I have the honor to give you the unfortunately too positive assurance that even in the rush of death he will receive care and remedies only from the hands of his own doctor, and if he is deprived of them he will not receive them from anyone and will stand as murdered by you". Five lines are crossed out. Then Montholon noted: "Letter from this Montholon Co. to Governor Sir Hudson Lowe".
The letter to be written by Montholon and addressed to Hudson Lowe presents variants of this draft.
A copy of this letter is attached by Montholon.
