Napoléon Ier (1769-1821)
+ L.S. "Napo", Fontainebleau 13 October 1810, "au Viceroi" d'Italie, Eugène de BEAUHARNAIS| the letter is written by
MÉNEVAL| 2 pages in-4.
About the first raid against the island of Lissa, a strategic point for the control of maritime traffic in the Adriatic Sea, and occupied since 1807 by the British.
[The raid by the Franco-Italian fleet, under the command of Captain de Navarre Dubourdieu, took place on October 18, 1810]. "My son, I have replied to you by Telegraph on the planned expedition of Lissa. I suppose that you have, gathered at Ancona, the frigates the Favorite, the Crown the Uranie, the Bellone & the Caroline, and the brigs the Mercury, the Iena, the Princess Auguste & the Charlotte, making nine batimens. There is no doubt that these nine batimens must be able to attack not only three but even four English frigates, but for this they must be stirred up. I think you have to compose your expedition of 60 elite infantry men per frigate, which makes 300 men for the five frigates, 25 men per brig, which makes 400 hs [...]. As Captain
DUBOURDIEU is enterprising and ambitious, you must not spur him on, you must leave him the bridle on the collar. I suppose he has already been on outings with his frigates. Wouldn't it be appropriate that he avoided English cruises, he went to Ragusa and tried cruises on points where the English are not. But one can do no better than to give carte blanche to the captain who, knowing his crews and the degree of confidence he must have in them, is aware of what he can" .
