He reads with pleasure his book [Fifty Years of Work without Wages], enjoying in particular the first chapters on Manchester "in the forties, the fifties, the sixties, and now". The English have no real history of their cities, nor of their nation, only of their churches and Parliament, and something beautiful could be written about prosaic Manchester, bringing out the soul of this city... He did not know that Manchester, and not Glasgow, was a pioneer in the socialisation of municipal functions, and now if a Russian friend asks him for advice on studying municipalism in England, he will send him to Manchester in the first place Similarly, the last chapters on Ancoats have interested him greatly, and he hopes that their friends will highlight Rowley's role in the Brotherhood. His best memories of lectures are of Ancoats, and once or twice in Glasgow and Edinburgh: he praises the Sunday audience at Ancoats, well known for its intellectual temperament - mixed in his reminiscences with Mark Hamburg's concerts in the Queen's
