JOSÉPHINE (1763-1814) Impératrice
+ L.A., Strasbourg 21 brumaire [November 12, 1805], to her son
EUGÈNE DE BEAUHARNAIS| 2 pages in-4.
Beautiful letter to her son, three weeks before Austerlitz, and on the project of his marriage with Princess Auguste of Bavaria.
"I see, my dear Eugène, by your last bulletins, that the army of Italy is also covered with glory and that the enemy is in retreat. Everything is going as well as we could have wished. For my part, I am no less happy to see the moment approaching when I will be able to join the Emperor. I am sure that he will keep his promise to me, and that I shall leave as soon as possible. It is said that the elector is waiting for me at Munich, and that they are preparing a good feast for me, the most pleasant thing will be to see you there, the Kaiser has given me hope of that in one of his letters. You know my tenderness for you, my dear son, and you must feel how happy I would be to see this hope fulfilled.
She received a letter from TALLEYRAND which enchanted her: "It pleases me that the Emperor told her about you. It is amazing the progress this young man is making every day. He is already more capable of governing than Lebrun. As Mr de Talleyrand spoke to me in this same letter about a marriage in which he is interested as well as you and which he believes should take place, I promised him to burn his letter [...]
But a sentence like the one I have just told you cannot be forgotten and I am sure that it will not spoil you, but that it will give you as much pleasure as it did me". She gives him a very tender kiss.
She adds: "I saw the Electoral Prince of Bavaria here, he told me a lot about you, how much he loved you, and he asked me when I wrote to you to tell you how much he loved you and how happy he was to have met you. I have just received a letter from the Emperor, he was in Linnz. He tells me that in five or six days' time a lot will happen. His outposts were only ten leagues away from Vienna".
