WAGNER Adolph (1835-1917) économiste allemand
2 L.A.S. "AWagner", August 1881, to a colleague| 4 and a half pages in-8 (bottom of 2nd leaf of 2nd letter missing, no loss of text)| in German.
Elberfeld 12 August. Left Berlin on Sunday to go to a meeting in Kissingen at the invitation of Chancellor BISMARCK. Yesterday in Barmen he had a terribly stormy meeting, but despite his hoarseness against the cries of the Social Democrats, he remained in control of the situation and at the same time, in the name of Bismarck, he represented his programme for the endowment of the workers' insurance ("Dotation der Arbeiterversicherung"). After a few days in the region, he will go to Göttingen, then to Sylt or Jiust to relax and recuperate for a few weeks . Following the election speech of August 3, he is insulted in anonymous postcards as a servile valet of the Jews.
But he wants to show that he is not a hard-core anti-Semite . ("Weil ich gegen dies "Todtschlageschrei" Heinrichs v Lauf energisch protests, beschimpft man mich jetzt in anonymen Postkarten als "servilen Judenknecht". [...] ich kein "strammer Antisemit" bin.")
Bad Obladis, Ried (Tyrol) 27 August. Since his visit to Kissingen, he had no direct contact with Bismarck, but wrote to him about his speech in Elberfeld. The elections will probably take place even later than planned. The Chancellor was inclined to postpone them further, but he had not yet made up his mind at the time of Wagner's visit . He will stay in Tyrol until 6 or 7 September, enjoying the cheese and mountain air ("Mir thut Käse und Bergluft sehr gut"), and then perhaps go to Engadine. He talks about their political tactics for not firing all the powder too early.
Stauffenberg certainly expects it to be as late as possible ("Auch taktisch ists wohl wichtig, nicht zu früh alles Pulver zu verschießen. Stauffenberg erwartet gewiß auch spätmöglichst") .
