Defense of DANTON.
Following the decision of the Paris City Council to give the name of Danton to a street to be opened in the district formerly inhabited by the revolutionary, Senator WALLON questioned the Minister of the Interior, and provoked a "historical debate" which gave a glimpse of "the beginning of justice [...]....] for this much slandered statesman who, in order to serve the Revolution and France, showed himself ready to sacrifice everything, up to glory, up to the honour of his name" ... In his learned defence of the figure, Wallon omitted to say that Danton was the initiator and organiser of national defence in 1792, "and that as such the French owe him eternal gratitude. But if Mr. Wallon had said that, how could he have talked about the September massacres, of which he claims to be convinced that Danton was one of the main perpetrators?"... Now, this is a prejudice due to the "alleged portrait" given of the tribune by Taine, and Spuller points to recent work... Danton will remain "one of the French who, along with Louis XI and the great Cardinal de Richelieu, did the most for France.
The King and the Prince of the Church constituted France| the lawyer Danton defended and saved it. Another plebeian, a lawyer like Danton, a revolutionary like him, heir to his genius and patriotism, defended it too, under the same national inspiration": this is GAMBETTA. "To such men, one should not haggle over the testimonies of national recognition, because this recognition is engraved in the hearts of the people and will never fade away" .
