MAZARIN Jules (1602-1661) cardinal et homme d'État
L.A.S. "GiuMazarini", Paris 25 November 1634, to Prince Thomas of SAVOIE-CARIGNAN| 2 pages in folio| in Italian (slightly pale ink).
Remarkable letter from the beginning of his career, written the day before his solemn entry into Paris as Nuncio.
[Mazarin, who is still only vice-legate in Avignon, has just been named, at the age of thirty-two, Extraordinary Nuncio of Pope Urban VIII to the court of Louis XIII. It is a decisive step in the career of the young Monsignor, which brings him closer to Cardinal de Richelieu and to power].
He would not perfectly enjoy the graces of His Holiness the Pope if he did not notify them to His Highness, "as to one of my greatest patrons who always treated me so favorably by declaring that he was agreeing to my very humble servitude"... Thus he informed him of his arrival at this court, with the title of Extraordinary Nuncio, after having regained possession of the legation of Avignon. May His Highness please honor him with his commandments and believe that in this advancement, Mazarin will willingly serve him.... Then he speaks of a business of 1500 pistols which he has with Baunis, and he transmits to the Prince a letter from his wife with whom he had several long conversations in Milan, "without my quality as Nuncio being able to preserve me from the accustomed quarrels. But I made her angry by telling her that I would take revenge by sending Your Highness small gifts from Rome so that She might give them to the ladies of Brussels"| he is going to have them sent to her by Mondini, "but not so that She might present them to any lady, for I am sure that this is something that Your Highness would not forgive me so easily.
I left Her Highness in perfect health in Milan, as well as all her children". And he assures her of his devotion...
