PROVENANCE
François-René de CHATEAUBRIAND, who published it in his Congress of Verona in 1838, in order to propose a flattering comparison with letters he himself had received from the sovereigns of his time: "we would prefer to have received from Henry IV, this note of which we have the original [...]. The Béarnais does not take himself seriously, like the potentates of our illustrious correspondents: he mocks him, his lightness and his crowns" (vol. II, p. 202).
