Coming from a family of bankers, he first studied law, which he abandoned in 1942 to devote himself to the plastic arts. After having worked as a teacher for a few years, he embarked on an artistic career. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Europe rebuilt itself. Pictorial art is undergoing a transformation. Georges Mathieu creates works by applying paint directly on the canvas with the tube. In 1947, the art critic Jean José Marchand defined Georges Mathieu's canvases by evoking for the first time the notion of "lyrical abstraction". Indeed, the artist is opposed to geometric abstraction, he frees himself from classical constraints and habits. He thinks of his art as a performance and places the emphasis on gestures. From the 1950s onwards he made numerous happenings and performances in front of an audience and definitively placed his work at the heart of action painting. The genius of gesture and creative impulses are sacralized. The spontaneity with which he works translates into a strong emotion, in the absence of an exact representation of AC2021
