BAKSHAISH CARPET (COTTON CHAIN AND WOVEN, WOOL VEHICLES),
NORTH-WEST PERSEUS, TOWARDS 1920
" The small town of Bakshayesh or Bashaish
is located south of Tebriz, on the bank
of a river called Talkheh, or Bitter River,
because of the unpleasant taste of its waters.
As early as the 19th century, carpets
similar to those of Hériz were woven there: warp and
double cotton weft, symmetrical knotting
of low density. However, the Bakshaish
do not have the rigidity and thickness of the Hériz,
and their colours are softer and more
mixed| the most typical is a bright pink,
due to the natural oxidation of the red obtained
from madder. There is also blue
and various shades of beige. The decoration, especially that
of the 19th century models, is famous for
its field decorated with a very stylized herati pattern,
accompanied sometimes by a medallion "
This carpet is decorated with large cypresses, trees
of life and geometric flowers on a blue background
navy. A wide red border with garlands
of stylized polychrome flowers is framed
by two counter-edges.
5.12 x 1.81 m
Slight wear
