Jacques Bousseau, born in 1681 in Chavagnes en Paillers, developed a definite talent for sculpture at a very early age. He soon joined Nicolas Coustou's workshop. In 1705, he went to Italy, to Rome for the prestigious Prix de Rome. In 1713, back in Paris, he was accepted at the Royal Academy and worked with Antoine Coyzevox. In 1726, Bousseau completed the marble group of René Frémin and Philippe Bertrand representing Zéphire and Flora. At the request of Cardinal de Noailles, he creates in Paris the sculptures for their family chapel at Notre Dame. He also received the commission for the two marble statues placed in the vestibule of the chapel of the Palace of Versailles. In 1736, at the request of King Philip V of Spain, he created two groups for the royal palaces of La Granja and Aranjuez.
Ulysse Bandant son Arc was the sculptor's reception piece at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture on 29 November 1715. This statue was considered by Bousseau himself as his masterpiece. The success of this work was immediate and some painters such as Nicolas Lancret represented it.
