A pupil of Jacques-Louis David (1748 -1825), Constance Charpentier was quickly considered one of the best portrait painters of the time. She exhibited regularly at the Salon and distinguished herself there with a gold medal in 1814.
The two academies presented for sale today are all the more exceptional in that they depict nude male models and are the work of a painter. We know that against the morals of the time, David had chosen to teach young women and if he had to close the workshop he had opened in 1787, we know that he opened a new street in Faubourg-Saint-Martin where he regularly registered some of his drawings as models. Perhaps it was in this context that our painter had access to nude models, suggesting that she was going to be able to try her hand at the Grand Genre.
