Saint Dominic resurrects Napoleone Orsini and Virgin and Child in heaven
Pen, brown ink wash and white chalk highlight 41.5 x 29 cm
Saint Dominic resurrects Napoleone Orsini and Virgin and Child in heaven Pen, brown wash and white highlight 16.4 x 11.4 in.
This drawing represents one of the best known miracles performed by Saint Dominic, founder of the Dominican order. The presence of the Virgin and Child surrounded by two Dominican monks seems to indicate that the drawing was made to serve as a model for small votive engravings, or, having been tiled, for an altar painting for a private chapel, perhaps belonging to a member of the order. Stylistically, the work is typical of the Bolognese school of the 17th century, which was the city of creation of the Dominican Order.
