Moonlight on the Ychusovaïa River
Oil on canvas
Signed in Cyrillic "P. Verechtchaguine" lower left 55.2 x 46.6 cm
Probably painted between 1960 and 1876
Provenance
Private collection in Paris
Brother of the famous orientalist Piotr
Verechtchaguine studied at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg and specialized from the very beginning in landscape painting. His work, classical in its inspiration, remains marked by a deep quietude and a particular gift in the balance of volumes that gives an elusive pain to his compositions.
Man blends into the beauty of nature or architecture, becoming the witness of a greatness that surpasses him. His most beautiful works are today kept at the gallery
Trétiakov. In 1876 Piotr Verechaghin made a series of paintings of the river
Chusovaya of the Perm Government for the Ural Railway Company.
