If their trade has now fallen into oblivion, the gainiers were an influential corporation in Paris. Their monopoly concerned all objects covered with leather. They had a monopoly on all objects covered with leather, including sheaths, scabbards, chests and furniture leather.
Incorporated as a corporation under Saint Louis and in 1323 as a body of jurande. During the Renaissance, the guild of bookbinders had to oppose the bookbinders who had the exclusive use of royal irons.
The most famous bookbinder was probably Jean-Claude Galluchat, inventor of the process that bears his name to soften the shagreen which Madame de Pompadour ordered from him on numerous occasions. Working for the court and Louis XV, he enjoyed royal favours.
