Halfway between the West and the Far East, this work wonderfully illustrates the perfect syncretism mastered by Le Pho. Having settled permanently in France for several years, the Vietnamese artist has grasped the essence of Western culture, which he skillfully manages to integrate into the traditions of the Far East.
This young girl emanates a gentleness, a grace which is not without recalling the delicacy of the female portraits of the man­nerist painters in the XVIth century. This shell, skillfully placed on the table, reinforces the femininity that emerges from this work. Attributed to the goddess of love and the feminine beauty of Venus, the shell is one of the symbols dear to Western culture. How­ever, other elements specific to the Far East complete this composition. Thus, the ao-dai worn and the Tongan headdress, can only evoke the artist's native Vietnam. The features of the young girl such as her complexion and her hair, takes up the Asian beauty canons. As for the peonies, appreciated by both cultures, make the junction. This work also underlines the artist's discovery in the use of colours, as an evidence in this vibrant and totally innovative palette.
Through a particularly mastered technique and a mix of influences, Le Pho offers here a composition where his talent is at its peak.
