DUMAS Alexandre fils (1824-1895)
The Lady of the Camellias. Paris, Alexandre
Cadot, 1848.
Two volumes in-8, 540 and 562 pp. Long-grained burgundy demimaroquin with corners, smooth spine decorated, gilt heads, untrimmed, slipcase (Bernasconi binding).
Original edition dated 1848.
Large copy with margins, made by Bernasconi, who worked for him from 1906 to 1948. He made so-called "romantic" bindings his label.
Alexandre Dumas fils was inspired by his love story with the courtesan Marie Duplessis, between September 1844 and August 1845. La Dame aux Camélias was written a few months after the death of his beloved. He moved to the Auberge du Cheval Blanc in Saint-Germain-en-Laye and completed the work in three weeks.
"Extremely rare work. It is perhaps the rarest of all romantics. An amateur, even a very difficult one, will be able to be satisfied with a copy that does not meet the definition of the perfect book and exceptionally acquire it in a modern binding, even trimmed and without its covers. In good quality period binding, it is almost impossible to find it" (M. Clouzot, Guide du bibliophile français, 1800-1880, p. 62).
PROVENANCE Fred Feinsilber (ex-libris)| Lascoutx (Cat.
I, 1948, #292)| Jean Davray (Cat. 1961, #148 with reproduction)| E.A. P[errier] (Cat., 1977, #76) (ex-libris)| J.A.B. (exlibris).
(Outer margins of the title pages and last leaf of Volume II redone, corners of some leaflets restored, a few shorter leaves of margins, scattered freckles).
