In-folio, calf, armoured in the centre of the plates in a frame of cold-stamped net, decorated at the 4 outer corners with lilies and at the 4 inner corners with towers Argent masoned Sable alternating with gonfanons Gules, all within a broad frame of cold-stamped palmettes, spine ribbed, caissons decorated with towers Argent masoned Sable and gonfanons Gules, gilt edges (Binding 17th century).
Reissue of the most important work of the Italian scholar Raffaele Maffei dit Volaterranus, whose first edition was printed in 1506 in Rome.
A true encyclopaedia of 33 books divided into 3 parts, the first one relating to geography enriched by the author's precious observations on the maritime discoveries of the
Portuguese and Spanish, the second one concerning anthropology which deals with illustrious men of antiquity and modernity, and finally the last part devoted to philology, especially the sciences in encyclopaedic aspects.
The book of Xenophon, a treatise on domestic and political economy enriched with precious indications on private life in Greece four centuries before Christ, closes the work.
A fine copy, almost complete in the early 16th century
(epidermides, missing head and tail, blunt corners, split bits, small wormholes, halo on the title page, well-preserved interior).
