TORRES-GARCIA Joaquin (1874-1949)
Set of three signed autograph letters addressed to the painter
Alfred GASPART S.l., 1931-1932, 4 pp. in ink on paper, various sizes, in French (some stains).
In Montparnasse, the painter Alfred Gaspart, a Frenchman born in Argentina (1900-1993), became friends with Pierre-Albert Birot, André Derain, Jean
Follain, Marie Laurencin, André Salmon and Torres-Garcia. It is during his years of captivity, during the war, that he reveals all his talent. Torres-Garcia
expresses all his distress and solicits the support of his friend.
- 8 November [19]31, 2 pp. in-8. Wonderful letters on the will to create, the pain of being an artist. "I go to the galleries every day, and it is to be discouraged. Obviously things are getting worse and worse.
My impression is that you can't expect anything from the dealers...
I still have to struggle with painting... At this moment, precisely, I must not stop my painting at any cost. I know that this is the time to do my best things. The more I do, the more things I see to do. And for this reason, in spite of the difficulties, I did not stop, and I still did some very good things... I have faith. That means I have no doubt that in the end the battle will be won for the spirit..."
Ask when Gaspart will come to see him with Follain, etc.|
- Feb. 24, 1932, 1 p. in-4. Priests him to help him to "get out of a really awful situation". He is going to have three exhibitions, notably at Jeanne
Bucher's with Arp and Ernst, and "I'll have to sell!!". So he asks his friend to bring people he knows to the openings: "We need the public, to encourage the dealers... Look for (as other times) among your acquaintances, people likely to like and buy something"|
- S.d. S.d. [1932], 1 p. in-12. Invites his friend to the opening of his exhibition at the Galerie Percier.
