STEINBECK John (1902-1968)

Signed autograph letter to Oliver BURGESS MEREDITH Stockholm, July 25 [1947], 1 page in-4 in blue ink on letterhead from Hotel Plaza in Stockholm, in English.
Stay in Stockholm before his trip to the USSR with the photographer
Robert Capa.
[Oliver BURGESS MEREDITH (1907-1997), actor, friend of Steinbeck, will be one of the victims of McCarthyism, blacklisted in the cinema].
He received Burgess's letters before leaving Paris. The French are an immoral people. But "Honest Jake Pfaff" made a beautiful dress for Gwyn [Steinbeck's second wife]. Stockholm is a beautiful city. They say Burgess is coming to play Winterset... He's leaving on Monday for Uncle Joe's [Joseph STALINE] hut. He has no idea what they'll find there, but he hopes it'll be good. CAPA is in good shape. He's out in the country right now photographing farmers, and probably farmers' daughters. He hopes that the premiere of Burgess [Winterset in Dublin] will be a triumph| he wishes it was his own play [The Last Joan, which Steinbeck will abandon].
He spent two days boating in the archipelago, and found it very good. Boats are beautiful things. If he needs to write to her, he can write to Joe Newman at the Herald Tribune office in Moscow and see if it goes through....
