RÉAGE Pauline (1907-1998)

Five signed autograph manuscripts, reading cards for Gallimard
editions - Signed autograph manuscript, S.l., March 1, 1966, countersigned by
Raymond QUENEAU (March 2, 1966), 2 pp. in-4 in brown and blue ink on hard NRF letterhead paper. Reading sheet for Gallimard editions on William S. Burroughs' novel, The Soft machine. Not selected, this novel would eventually see its French translation published in 1968 by Christian Bourgois. "The brief reviews, printed on the back cover of the American edition, are magnificently hypocritical: Burroughs is a satirical writer who attacks, through the imaginary adventures he describes, "much of what is vicious, false and absurd in contemporary society. If the repeated and meticulous description of what goes on between two lost boys who are on drugs and who sodomize each other is an attack on contemporary society, bravo. Half the chapters of The Soft Machine are devoted to these occupations.
The other half is a sort of crazy story (a series of stories rather) which has as its theme a journey back in time of Mayan civilization where slavery and human sacrifices flourished. The tortures inflicted on the victims, which are learned and complicated, are described at length, and give the pretext for countless orgasms, both in the victims and in the spectators, especially hangings. It remains that all the chapters on this Mexican or Mayan theme are of a wild lyricism that is truly admirable. The chapters purely on drugs and pederasty, unpublishable in France at the moment, it seems to me, are much less original. But Burroughs is here nevertheless the very great mad writer of the Naked lunch, with Sade and Lautréamont, if you like, as references, rather than Genet?
